DUO ARRESTED FOR FRAUD RELATING TO TAXI PERMITS

Two suspects, male aged 34 and female 40, were summoned by the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (SCCI) in Bloemfontein to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates' Court on 27 August 2024, on charges of fraud and money laundering. 

It is alleged that between December 2018 and July 2019, the two suspects misrepresented themselves as having authority to organise taxi permits.

Several victims who were interested in becoming taxi owners paid the pair different amounts for permits.

A cumulative R100 000 was lost.

After realising that the suspects were taxi drivers who did not have the authority to issue permits, the victims approached the police.

The matter was then referred to the Hawks culminating in their arrest.
