The Premier of the Free State Mxolisi Dukwana, congratulates the Senior National Soccer team Bafana Bafana, on their significant 3-1 win over neighbours Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup Qualifier, held at a packed Free State Stadium, on 11 June 2024.
Premier Dukwana, together with the Acting MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Makalo Mohale, and the Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Gregory Nthatisi, were in attendance as the hosts produced a sterling performance.
The Premier expressed his wholehearted appreciation to football fanatics and residents of the province, for attending this all important clash in large numbers, showing their unwavering support for the national team.
The match, which places the revived national team second in Group C with seven points after four matches, was played in front of a full capacity, buoyant crowd at the Free State Stadium.
It was the first time that the national team played at the 46 000-capacity stadium since the 2010 World Cup, and Premier Dukwana was happy with the turn out.
He further indicated that he remains optimistic that the match will go a long way in ensuring that the province hosts such high-level international fixtures in the future.
“There is no doubt that the Free State is the spiritual home of football, and has some of the most passionate and patriotic supporters in the country. The atmosphere during the match, demonstrated once again why the Free State remains capable of hosting such big events”, said Premier Dukwana.
